Education learning center
At the heart of the proposed learning center is the same commitment to diversity, tolerance, and freedom as in 1866, when Christiansburg Institute opened to meet the needs of previously enslaved people and poor whites alike. Learning sessions will aim to satisfy unmet needs of the community in collaboration with local educational institutions elementary and secondary schools, colleges and universities and business and community organizations.

To date, learning center related programs have ranged from oral history collecting to a variety of Service Learning projects. Collaborative educational efforts between CII and local universities have provided more than 100 students with substantial off-campus, for-credit learning experiences. An ongoing educational project we call History Harvest involves actual and virtual collecting of historic photographs and artifacts. Notable among our current educational efforts is an on-line set of interactive learning opportunities aimed at general and targeted users developed with support from the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities. Launching the VCI program is an on-line history which will focus on the Booker T. Washington years (1896-1934), during which the institute was supervised by the well-known educator from Tuskegee Institute.
